“Five years after Catherine’s father died in an accident, she still couldn’t bring herself to like or trust the man that her mother remarried – her stepdad Stefan. Never did anything wrong to her, but her intuition told her there was something off about him.

One day when she was alone with him, she turned on her camera. Her mom was so shocked when she saw the video. Just like most girls, Catherine was excited about the upcoming prom and planned everything down to the last detail. Everything was already put in place, from her outfit and shoes to her hair and makeup. Nothing would ruin that day for her; it would be perfect, she thought.

A few weeks before the prom, Catherine’s mother, Emily, walked into her room to drop off her prom dress. She informed Catherine that she had invited her stepdad to the prom, and that didn’t sit too well with the teenager. You see, Catherine didn’t like her stepdad one bit, and she and her mom would get into constant fights because of him.

‘I don’t want him at my prom. Why did you even invite him?’ Catherine said, shooting daggers at her mother. ‘Why don’t you want him at your prom? He does take very good care of us. When will you give him a chance?’ Emily queried.

‘Mom, he’s not my dad. Can’t you see he’s using you? He doesn’t deserve all the things you do for him, but you keep cooking and cleaning up after him. You’re just a maid to him,’ Catherine fired back.

Emily shook her head before she replied, ‘Don’t you say that, Catherine. We can afford the life we live because of him. You know how hard it was after your dad died. You have to understand that he loves us, and he shows it too. You should be grateful to him. He married me, gave us a home, and even offered you his last name.’ Emily spoke softly. She tried to convince her daughter to see Stefan in a different light, but the girl remained adamant.

A short silence filled the room, and Emily walked out right after. Catherine slumped down into her bed, buried her face in her pillow, and let out muffled screams. She tried to figure out why she didn’t like Stefan, even though he had really not wronged her in any way. Besides, everyone seemed to love him too. More so, he did whatever he could to assure them of his unwavering love and loyalty. Yet, something kept nagging at her, making it difficult for them to get along well. Whatever that was, Catherine was getting more and more tired of it coming in between her and her mother.

Catherine’s gut feeling was something she shared with her biological father, Stan. Stan’s gut feeling was always accurate. In fact, it was the only reason Catherine and her mother were still alive. On the day Stan was involved in the accident that took his life, Emily and Catherine had wanted to go with him, but he declined, saying he had a feeling that something bad would happen. Sadly, his premonition came true when a drunk driver crashed into his car, leading to his instant death.

This same gut feeling was telling Catherine that her stepdad wasn’t so innocent and that he was a good-for-nothing fellow. So she could see through him, even though he acted so perfectly and gentlemanly on the surface. But since she had no proof, Catherine decided to stop showing Stefan how much she disliked him. Besides, she and her mother had been growing distant, all because of the constant arguments over Stefan, and she missed the great relationship they once had. So, for her mother’s sake, Catherine decided she would let peace reign.

With her mind made up, Catherine wiped her tears, got up, and headed to the kitchen, where she met her mom chatting with her best friend, Maura Kinley, who lived next door.

‘Mom, can I talk to you?’ Catherine asked, making her presence known. The two women turned their heads to face Catherine, and Emily nodded. Catherine held her mom’s hands, looked into her eyes, and said, ‘I’m so sorry for everything. Stefan can come to my prom, and I will be nice to him henceforth.’

Emily was so glad that Catherine was finally ready to give Stefan a chance. She hugged her daughter and told her she wouldn’t regret it.

After six months, Catherine graduated high school with honors and passed her entrance exam to a prestigious university. Her stepdad seemed genuinely happy for her when she broke the news, but there was something in his eyes that made her uneasy. It was the way he looked at her, as if he was plotting something terrible against her. Catherine decided not to tell her mother about it, so as to avoid any arguments.

Catherine found college life quite interesting. She enjoyed her classes, and to be sincere, she was glad to be away from home and her annoying stepfather. Things got even better when she met and fell in love with Charles. They spent lots of time together and made every moment count. They were truly a perfect couple.

Soon, Catherine got to her second year and moved out of the school’s hostel to live off-campus. She decided to stay with her mom for a while before getting her own apartment. During the first week of the fall semester, Charles asked Catherine out on a date. Charles’s best friend was celebrating his birthday, and they had lots of activities planned from morning till night. So he wanted Catherine to join him. Knowing that her mom and Stefan wouldn’t approve of skipping classes for the day, Catherine, eager for an exciting adventure, devised a plan.

The following morning, Catherine’s family began their day as usual. Her stepdad had business to attend to, and her mom prepared to leave for work too. Meanwhile, Catherine pretended as if she was going to school. She got ready and left the house first. However, instead of going to school, she walked around the street, giving her mom and Stefan time to leave the house so she could go back and prepare for her date with Charles. She wanted to look perfect for her date.

After an hour had elapsed, Catherine was certain that her parents were no longer at home. She hurried back and found the house to be eerily quiet. She went into her room and took her time to dress up. Afterward, she went to her mother’s bedroom to fetch her beautiful red lipstick so she could apply it before stepping out for her date.

A few minutes passed as she frantically searched for it, but before she could even locate it, she suddenly heard someone open the front door. Then she heard her stepdad’s voice and footsteps coming closer. ‘Oh no,’ she exclaimed in panic. In a desperate attempt to avoid being seen, she darted into her mother’s wardrobe and hid there. There was a little crack in the wardrobe, so Catherine could see whoever came into the room. But nothing could have prepared her for what happened next.

While hiding in the wardrobe, Catherine suddenly heard a woman’s voice. At first, she thought it was her mother’s, but the woman’s laughter convinced her that it was someone else. Confused and curious, Catherine peered through the slight opening to see whoever it was. Suddenly, the door to her mother’s room came open, and to her greatest shock, her stepdad walked in with another woman.

Catherine’s eyes widened, and she quickly stifled a gasp of surprise. She couldn’t believe that the woman standing next to her stepfather was Mora, her mother’s best friend. She felt a wave of pain wash over her as she watched them walk towards the bedroom. Acting quickly, Catherine grabbed her phone and started recording them through the crack in the wardrobe door. Even though she felt uneasy recording them, she knew having evidence was essential. This would be proof that Stefan was a cheat and a terrible person, like she had always claimed.

An hour later, her stepdad left with his mistress, and Catherine immediately got out of the wardrobe. She called Charles to cancel their plans for the day, explaining that she was suddenly feeling unwell. Charles, although hurt that she couldn’t make it to the birthday party, asked her to take care of herself. He also promised to visit later in the day.

Afterward, Catherine picked up her phone and dialed her mother’s phone number. When Emily answered the phone, Catherine asked her if she could get off work early. Emily immediately sensed that something was wrong, but Catherine assured her that there was no problem. However, she told her to get home as soon as she could.

After two hours, Emily arrived home to find Catherine waiting for her in the living room with a solemn expression on her face. Now she was sure that her daughter had something to tell her. So she sat beside her and asked her to share whatever was bothering her.

Catherine took a deep breath before taking her mother’s hands in hers. Then she said, ‘Mom, I’m so sorry for what I’m about to tell you, but you deserve to know, and you deserve better. I’ll always be there for you, and I want us to be happy.’

Afterwards, Catherine confided in Emily about her day’s events, from skipping class to arriving home and catching Stefan with Mora. She then showed Emily the video she had recorded. Emily was so shocked that she couldn’t utter a word. The shock, pain, and terror she felt were indescribable. She felt stupid for giving her heart out to such a cheat and betrayer.

Later that week, Emily ended things with Stefan for good. She and her daughter also left the house. Stefan did everything he could to reconcile with Emily, but all his efforts were futile. Three months later, Emily and Stefan were officially divorced. Catherine made sure she spent lots of time with her mother. Even when she had to move out of her mom’s house and live close to the campus, she visited her on weekends.

In her senior year, Catherine visited her mother one weekend and met a man in the house. He had come to pick Emily up for their date. Catherine could tell that the man was genuinely in love with her mother. She was sure he would never do anything to hurt Emily. This time around, Emily’s gut feeling told her to trust her mom’s new boyfriend.
