Alton, IL – Police have arrested a 22-year-old man in the gruesome beheading of a pregnant woman after her decapitated head was found in a dumpster outside an apartment building late last week.
“What was observed, what was learned, what was found, is absolutely terrible,” Alton Police Chief Marcos Pulido said in an emotional video describing the gruesome scene, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “She was decapitated by a freaking savage monster.”
Investigators said 22-year-old Liese Dodd’s mother became concerned when she couldn’t reach her daughter on June 10, so she went to check on her shortly before 1 p.m. that day.
Dodd, who was nearly eight months pregnant with her first child, had recently moved into an apartment located in the 3400-block of Bolivar Street, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
The woman’s mother arrived to find the horrific scene and contacted police.
Dodd’s neighbor, April Wooten, said she spoke with Dodd’s mother shortly after the discovery, KSDK reported.
“Her mom looked so broken, she looked so broken,” Wooten said. “She turned around, she looked at us, me and my boyfriend were standing in the door way and she said, ‘He [expletive] killed her
According to court documents, investigators located Dodd’s severed head inside a dumpster outside her apartment, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
Her baby girl was due on July 27.
“What she went through…can make some people completely lost for words,” Chief Pulido said.
Approximately two hours later, officers about 30 miles away in Gillespie were investigating a report of a bicycle theft when they spotted a man who matched the description of the alleged thief, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
Holloway and Dodd had been in an “on-and-off dating relationship for about two years,” Chief Pulido later confirmed.
“The sufferings for the victim are horrible,” Chief Pulido said, according to the River Bender. “Nobody should have to endure what Liese and her unborn child went through. On behalf of the Alton Police Department, I offer my sincerest condolences to Liese’s family and friends.”
Holloway was charged on June 13 with two counts of first-degree murder, two counts of intentional homicide of an unborn child, dismembering a human body, concealment of a homicide death, and possession of a stolen car, KMOV reported.
His bail was set at $2 million.
Dodd’s mother said Holloway was not the father of her unborn granddaughter, KMOV reported.
“We believe the evidence will show that the defendant’s gruesome actions here killed both a young woman and the child she carried in her womb,” Madison County State’s Attorney Thomas Haine told the River Bender.
“In the eyes of the law, both these killings are equal and he will now face justice for both,” Haine added. “I want to thank the Alton Police Department and the many assisting agencies for their swift actions in taking this dangerous offender off the street.”
Investigators said Holloway was already serving a two-year probation sentence for robbery when he allegedly committed the gruesome murder, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.
That case stemmed from a 2019 incident in which he robbed his friend of cash while they were heading to make a marijuana purchase.
